For those of you longtime followers, you know this jacket is one of my favorite and hardest won garments. You can read the story of how I wrestled it from the hands of gay man in a Parisian thrift store here. What I love about this jacket is how perfectly it embodies the idea of “fashion.” High fashion is a little crazy and most ensembles require a serious degree of casual cool to pull off. Especially in Boston you should’ve seen the looks I got strolling down Newbury Street in a glorified pimp jacket. But hey, you gotta make sacrifices for #fashion. #fashion2

To make this look especially meta, photographer Rebecca Isenhart shot it in front of a store. Because let’s be honest, nothing is more #fashion than shooting an outfit in front of a fast-fashion consumer abyss.
#fashion3To tone down the crazy, I paired the jacket with a leather mini skirt, a black knit top, and the fashion world’s current favorite accessory: the lace-up flat. This keeps the focus on the statement piece and also gives an otherwise frumpy silhouette a little sex appeal. #fashion4In case you didn’t see it the first time, this jacket has a glitter amoeba pattern embroidered on the back. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better. #fashion6

In the pursuit of easy, comfortable work clothes I stumbled across this shirtdress at Primark. Blue is my go-to color and this dress is conservative enough to wear to work but stylish enough to wear after hours. For work I sometimes add a blazer or a belted sweater while I prefer a leather jacket for nighttime. View More: http://stephanieritaphoto.pass.us/celina-februaryView More: http://stephanieritaphoto.pass.us/celina-februaryView More: http://stephanieritaphoto.pass.us/celina-february

Blush is my new favorite color of the season. There’s been an uptick in styles in this color after Pantone named “Rose Quartz” (aka blush), one of their colors of the year. Typically I’m not too interested in the Pantone colors, but this hue is exactly the kind of effortlessly pretty that spring calls for. I picked this dress up at Marshalls and added a little Kendra Scott bling to make it pop. blushingbeautyDespite my Rose Quartz obsession, it was the versatility of this dress that sold me on it. I can wear it belted for a more fitted look or as a trapeze dress for a casual vibe. It works with a leather jacket just as easily as a classic trench and seamlessly flows from the work day to a rooftop bar. blushingbeauty3blushingbeauty2blushingbeauty4

Glitter Goddess

My love of glitter has long been documented on Trends and Tolstoy (remember this, and this?), and today I’m taking it to a new level. Glitter harem pants. Oh yes. Harem pants are another one of my favorite trendy clothing items so I couldn’t say no to a pair with a little extra shine. I picked up these babies at a thrift store in New Orleans.

glittergoddess2

glittergoddessI toned down the rest of the outfit by pairing the pants with a simple black shirt and flats. They create a sophisticated backdrop for the statement bottoms.

Old Fashioned Girl

I’ve always been drawn to vintage style. Fashion history is interesting in that the garments reflect the time period they were designed in. For example, sparse simple looks during World War I, versus a lush extravagance during the ’20s. I love wearing vintage looks because it’s like wearing a bit of history. Each garment has had a whole life before you and has seen a whole different time.

oldfashionedgirl4

oldfashionedgirlI found this dress in a thrift store in New Hampshire. I thought about hemming it to make it more contemporary but I didn’t want the integrity of the look to be compromised. Instead I added some mixed pattern heels and a cloche to give it that old/new juxtaposition.

Purple Palazzo Pants

These pants are one of the many items I picked up while in Paris. I’ve been searching for a good pair of palazzos for a while and these were too good to pass up. I found them hidden in the back of a thrift store in between a selection of sad polka dot dresses. The ’70s are back for spring and fall which I’ve embraced here with the wide-leg. But by pairing them with a basic black v-neck and booties, I bring the look into 2015.

Those of you who have followed my blog for a while know that I have a penchant for wild clothes. If it looks like something no one should ever wear, I probably own it. So when I spotted this purple mohair embellished jacket in a Parisian thrift store, I had to have it. I’m fairly certain it was owned by a pimp before me, but wow is it fabulous.

Jump On It

My obsession with jumpsuits continues with this beauty, another one of my Parisian thrift store finds. It has a very ’80s vibe that I’m digging here with the loose harem fit and geometric cutouts. I especially love a good jumpsuit in the summer because it’s easy to throw on and boom, outfit done. To tone down the casual vibe of this look I added my leather jacket and those spiked stilettos from Monday’s post.

Hat Trick

I’ve proven time and again that hats are one of my favorite ways to accessorize. This floppy hat is one of my best, it adds a dose of glamour to any outfit. Here I used it to keep the outfit from looking too ’80s. With wide-leg trouser shorts and a vintage puff-sleeved top it was veering a little towards a 1987 picnic. The hat brings in a more sophisticated edge.

hattrick2How adorable is this bracelet from the new Kendra Scott collection, Mystic Bazaar? I’m obsessed with their new looks. Although I’m more partial to the dusty metals and glittering drusy in the collection, this bracelet has a certain kind of whimsy. Here are some of my favorites from Mystic Bazaar: Isabella Bracelet, Fran Earrings, Claire Hand Chain, Beckett Double Ring.

Little Toy Soldier

I found this dress at a Goodwill in New Hampshire. It was a child’s costume from a community theatre production and it was floor length. Fortunately, being mini has its perks, and I took it home, chopped off the bottom and turned it into a fashion piece. And by me I mostly mean my mom.

I’m currently in Montreal and this dress was a perfect nod to the past. The victorian era collar and rich navy and gold tones remind me of a romantic Gilded Age, but the mini length gives it a contemporary feel. It blended right in on the European-style streets.

When in Boston

As a born-and-bred New Englander, I’m used to dressing for cold weather. In Boston it can be challenging to find the balance between cuteness and circulation. Sweater dresses are one of my go-to winter styles. I picked this one up at a vintage market in Central Square and test drove it in Iceland.

When the snow rolls in I pair the look with fishnets and boots for extra warmth.

Sartorial Superhero

When I saw this cape at the thrift store it was love at first sight. I love the drama of the cape silhouette and it doesn’t hurt that this fleece baby feels like a blanket. With the dip in temperatures this weekend it was finally cool enough to take her out for a spin. I edged up the Little Red Riding Hood vibes with my leather pants.

I shot these photos at one of the Fog x FLO fog sculptures in the Emerald Necklace. You can read my article about the installation in The Bay State Banner

Teal in the Trenches

I found this teal trench coat at Savers and it was love at first shoulder pad. With all the midi skirts and dresses I’ve been buying I need the coats to match. And this is a great quality London Fog trench with a removable lining. Plus the color is so fun and uplifting for spring! I’m currently wearing this jacket in Venice and it’s so far been a great travel pick.

I found this XL vintage dress at Savers and fell in love with it. It’s got a ladylike style but an ’80s print that makes for a weird but wonderful combination. I fixed the oversized issue with a wide belt that bunches up some of the extra fabric and threw on a matching trench.

Accessory Overload

Though I am dressing up during this pandemic in an attempt to feel normal, I have had to scale things back a little. Because most people are wearing workout clothes or straight sweatpants around, the scale for acceptable clothing has shifted. Now if I go out in so much as a simple dress I look overdressed, never mind if I wore one of my more elaborate tutus or a printed suit.

As a result, I’ve been keeping my looks pretty simple, for example this floral skirt and sweater, and jazzing them up with accessories like this statement necklace, colorful trench, and fascinator. It’s working for now but I think we all know I can’t be kept in simple clothes for long.

The Blue in My Eyes

Spring has been slow to arrive this year, but that is allowing me to utilize my coats for a while longer. This one in a rich cobalt tweed with faux fur sleeves won great appreciation at a dinner I went to hosted by Quebec tourism. I paired it with similar tones (love a monochrome look these days) and tulle for a little texture play.
